Sensai Morihei Ueshiba

Morihei Ueshiba (1883-1969) was history's greatest martial artist. Even as an old man of eighty, he could disarm any foe, down any number of attackers, and pin an opponent with a single finger. Although invincible as a warrior, he was above all a man of peace who detested fighting, war, and any kind of violence. His way was Aikido, which can be translated as "The Art of Peace." Morihei Ueshiba is referred to by the practitioners of Aikido as O Sensei, "The Great Teacher".

The Founder Of Aikido (O’ sensei Morihei Ueshiba1883-1969)

The founder of Aikido, Morihei Ueshiba, was born on December 14, 1883, to a farming family in an area of the Wakayama Prefecture now known as Tanabe. Among five children, he was the only son. From his father Yoroku, he inherited a samurai's determination and interest in public affairs, and from his mother an intense interest in religion, poetry and art. In his early childhood, Morihei was rather weak and sickly, which led to his preference of staying indoors to read books instead of playing outside.

What is Aikido?

Aikido is a martial art, created by the late Morihei Ueshiba, of Japan at the start of the 20th century. Ueshiba's talents in swordsmanship and Daitoryu Aiki-Jujitsu, can clearly be seen within each and every Aikido technique.
Ueshiba based Aikido upon circular movements to redirect aggressive and offensive attacks back to the assailant. It consists of purely defensive techniques. For more practical defenses, sometimes atemi (punching and kicking) is used and illustrated in practice.

The Karate Belt rankings are the greatest source of gratification to the Karateka. These ranks provide the necessary incentive to the Karateka and urge him to work harder to achieve the next belt. In the initial days of Karate-do and in fact other allied martial arts like Judo and Aikido the only belts awarded were the White, Brown and Black Belts. No other coloured belts were awarded. Thus Karateka in those days had no option-either he passed or he failed. It was real serious stuff, a matter of life & death, success and failure.

Stand with the right side of your body facing an imaginary target with your knees bent and your feet shoulders' width apart. Lift your right knee, pointing it just to the right of the target and pivoting your body toward the same direction. Kick with your right leg, as though you are hitting the target.
